Major Arcana
The Chariot
Ted’s chariot speeds away from the castle on an important mission. His daredevil balancing on the front rail of the chariot instead of standing inside emphasises his speed and urgency, and reminds us that the often mundane task of driving is in itself a constant balancing act. His two steeds are out of the picture, but their reins, black and white, tell us that they are very different animals. In Kabbalah, they represent Strength and Wisdom, the left and right hand pillars of the Tree of Life. In traditional Chinese philosphy, they are Yin and Yang, the complementary forces of dark and light, passive and active, or feminine and masculine. These dynamics would seem likely to pull in opposite directions, a tendency that must be countered by careful control on the part of the driver.
Over Ted’s head flutters a blue banner, decorated with stars. This indicates that he is operating “under the sky,” in other words that the primary significance of this card is directed towards earthly, rather than spiritual matters.
On the front of the chariot is the depiction of a crab, representing the zodiac sign of Cancer, which corresponds to this card. The astrological sign for Cancer can just be made out on the buckle of Ted’s sword belt.
For no special reason other than that it seems to fit the ethos of this card, the castle in the background is modelled on Krak des Chevaliers, the ancient crusader castle located in present day Syria.
